Technology in Medical practice – Enabling the Unable
Technology knows no boundaries and neither does knowledge. Information technology applied to health sciences gives it scaleability, reliability, proximity and above all - remote application of experiences.
On August 28, 2009, the eminent PROTON Guest Dr. John DesMarteau enlightened and shared the wisdom nuggets on ‘Technology in Medical Practices’ during the eleventh Global MDP of PROTON business school.
Dr. John is the Chairman, President and CEO of LAXOR, Inc. and is currently working on one of the best online personal health record services. He possesses deep knowledge and experience in clinical and managerial fields, especially information technology in a non-direct patient care setting in order to advance the quality of healthcare.
The speaker initiated the session with some real life examples that highlighted the evolution of technology over the years. He emphasized the application of technology on the other aspects of life saving practices. He said that IT gave a person a fair number of choices of application but one should not forget the person who is going to be benefited from it.
Medical science incorporates all the major innovations in IT. The speaker discussed the key areas of application of IT in medical practices such as computing power, internet, nanotechnology, robotics, advance imaging, photonics and translators. He explained these through various examples like robotic surgery, pacemakers, MRI etc.
He explained at length the finer aspects of the US Healthcare system and the reforms that took place recently. He said that the US is taking initiatives in the healthcare system to make it more structured and to be made available for the masses. They are spending an enormous amount to implement these measures.
Dr. John also discussed about the potential of Indian healthcare system and how it can develop itself through the use of technology. He threw light on the use of telemedicine in remote areas where doctors are not easily available. He said that India can leap into 21st century healthcare by providing better quality, higher efficiency and cost effective medical service to patients.
Dr. John stated that IT has enabled improved quality healthcare services to the patients all over the world along with computerized physician order entry system which has reduced human errors, thereby providing better medical services.
In addition to this he also mentioned that with the advent of new technology we can now detect the possibilities of getting infected by a particular disease in future. One of the methods which supplement this research is the study of Genome.
This comprehensive analysis increased the curiosity of Protons to gain more insights on such global topics.
The successful completion of XI Global MDP proved that every moment at PROTON business school brings opportunity to discover more. The COO of PT universe Mr. Manish Saraf thanked Dr. John for his efforts in coming all the way from the USA and spending his precious time with us.
