Society bears a witness to the fact that inevitable change comes over with great speed. Adapting to this change can be done by improving our learning skills with tools such as speed reading and mind mapping techniques.
The Guest faculty Dr.Chandrashekhar Ranade an ENT surgeon,MBA(HR) enlightened the Protons on the above topics. He is also a professional trainer in the areas of Mind Mapping and NLP. Currently he is the Director with CPR Learning Systems.
The session started with a beautiful quote “Money lost can be recovered, energy wasted can be regenerated but time lost cannot be regained”. As per Mr. Chandrashekhar, having dreams and writing them down breeds success. He also said that a dream should be the one that is impossible to achieve. All the Protons were advised to write down their dreams with colorful pens using the mind mapping techniques to make them more effective.
Then Mr.Chandrashekhar introduced how to carry out speed reading. He introduced the concept “eye fixation”. Fixation in reading is when our eye stops on a letter or word in the process of reading. Ninety per cent of our time is lost because we are habitual to stop at a point and retrace what we have already read. Using a pointer such as a pen, while speed reading can avoid the habit of retracing.
The session further led into mind mapping techniques. Mind maps are tools to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other linked items arranged around a central key word or idea. They are used to generate, visualize, structure, classify ideas and are used as aids in team building, organization problem solving, decision making etc. If there is one highly effective way of getting information in and out of our brain! then it is the mind mapping technique said Dr. Chandrashekhar. The process of taking down notes becomes more creative, logical and simple. Mind maps have a natural organizational structure that radiates from the center. Lines, symbols, words, colors and images are used according to simple, brain-friendly concepts to generate mind maps. They convert a long list of monotonous information into colorful, memorable and highly organized diagram that works in line with the brain's natural way of doing things.
Finally Mr.Ranade showed us how survival as a professional today demands two new approaches to the written word. First is orchestrating information, by skillfully choosing what to read and what to ignore. Second is integrating information, by reading faster with greater comprehension.
