PROTON business school - Creating responsible professionals for the 21st century

“Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision,
passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”

Warren Bennis, Leadership guru

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF MENTOR

Management education will always be required. Remember Harvard Business School was founded in 1908.

India is a land of promise. Opportunities are visible everywhere. Despite the global slowdown, GDP growth has not stopped or turned negative. Young people from all over are raring to go. The state governments are falling over each other through pothole-lined streets, luring investors and investments. Reputed international publications are – for the first time – continuously speaking positively about India and in a tone that is not patronizing. The India story, as they say, is finally happening.

But scratch below the surface gloss and surprising facts emerge. There are very few truly qualified people for very many jobs. Industry is struggling to cope with half-baked graduates and under-prepared post-graduates, churned out en masse, and possessing no in-depth understanding of even basic topics. There is no holistic approach in teaching and learning, with little coverage to topics beyond immediate curriculum needs. No community connectivity, no social projects, no environmental sensitivity. In the shortsighted race for diplomas and degrees, educators and students have unfortunately not always maintained the quality of education. And industry is feeling the pain and searching for solutions.

This is what led to the creation of PROTON in July 2008. As an education industry professional with more than 17 years of grassroots experience, I realized that there was a huge scope to create a “positive” business school that focused beyond the mere award of diplomas and degrees. That there was a need to provide a transformational educational experience to unleash the inner energies of this amazing generation and to create true professionals in the process. I realized that if we could bring all our experience, learning, contacts and good intent together to create a comprehensive transformational programme that lifted the students to a different plane of understanding, involvement and joy, the students would be lapped up by a grateful industry and PROTON would surely grow to be counted among the nation's best institutes.

When I started in the education sector 17 years ago with a garage-institute called Professional Tutorials (now PT education), it was not easy. Back then, not many IIT graduates with IIM offers in hand headed to a family garage to start education enterprises. It is glamorous now, but all I got then was criticism laced with ridicule. I learnt the ropes the hard way. What I did learn well along the way, was that to survive and flourish one had to get the vision right, the processes well-structured, and the team motivated. I learnt that it was very essential to be responsible for oneself. I had to teach myself to be a motivated professional.

Young friend, today I invite you to embark on your personal journey to become a responsible professional. You need not do so alone; you can join hands with educators and fellow students at PROTON and share the ecstasy and adrenaline that is pumping through our veins. You will not find a similar programme anywhere else, which strives so hard to carve each aspect of your personality, and build solid character, through activities, projects and assignments so wide and diverse. We'll put into practice what Warren Bennis famously said 'Taking charge of your own learning is a part of taking charge of your life, which is the sine qua non in becoming an integrated person'. Corporates and organizations, we are sure, would love to take on board Protons with such promise.

Our beliefs and values are reflected in the pages that follow, from the profiles of people who have joined hands with us, and the structure we follow. If you truly wish to be a responsible professional who rises to the demands of the 21st century, look no further.
